When the after school bell rings, students are grabbing their backpacks and running down to the gym to change into their martial arts uniforms.

Edgemont Elementary started an after school martial arts class about 11 years ago to train students in the Korean martial art of Hapkido. The purpose of this class is to, not only help students to progress in Won Jin Hapkido, but also teach them self-defense and leadership skills.

Master Jay Nicol is the head instructor of the after school class and currently holds a 5th degree black belt in Won Jin Hapkido.

Through the program, students have the opportunity to achieve a black belt rank while also improving their skills and self-confidence levels. Edgemont students were tested for rank advancement last week.
