This week, Edgemont fourth graders from Mrs. Harber’s class inched their way around the school as they learned about measurement.

The students had been learning about how to find the area and the perimeter of various shapes. To further emphasize this learning concept, they were asked to apply this knowledge in a real-world setting. This lesson went along with the math core standard: “apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real-world and mathematical problems”.

Students practiced this knowledge through measuring different objects around their school such as their desk, the staircase railings, cabinets and much more. They worked together as teams to figure out the measurements and record the numbers accurately.

Through this lesson, students were able to practice finding the area and perimeter of different shapes, as well as learn how these math skills could be applied to different scenarios in their life.
