District Teacher of the Year: Deanna Coates

Each year we award a Teacher with the District Teacher of the Year Award for creating a rich school culture and excellence in teaching. We award Lead Facilitator Deanna Coates the District Teacher of the Year Award this year.

Deanna Coates has a storied career in education, earning this year’s Teacher of the Year award, the KSL teacher feature in November 2021, and the RC Willey Extra Mile Award in fall 2020. She has belonged to the Student Success Team for at-risk students, the Department Chair Committee, and the Instructional Leadership Team. She’s participated in Running Start training for new Special Education Teachers and currently serves on the Advisory Steering Committee and as a Compliance Coach and Mentor for Special Education Teachers and new Teachers.

Coates does not work for awards or praise. On top of her work mentoring and instructing, she spends two-to-three evenings a week helping run extracurricular activities, and as a Vice President of the Parent Committee for Ballroom at Provo High School, she works every day because she genuinely loves her students and wants to watch their talents grow, both in school and out.

Deanna Coates believes that teaching is all about learning through small steps and celebrating the victories along the way. Her reward is working with various students as they earn these “I get it” moments, which makes the struggle worthwhile. Coates always tries to find fun new ways to teach concepts, finding methods of teaching that causes students to interact more with one another. Her goal is to create a space where students can feel free to make mistakes and test new concepts.

Deanna Coates’s ability to make others feel welcome isn’t exclusive to her students. Below is an excerpt from her Teacher of the Year Recommendation Letter:

“Deanna fills one of the most challenging positions at our school, yet you would never notice it on her face or demeanor. Despite the many challenges, demands, and personalities she faces each day, Deanna is always positive and professional. As the Lead Facilitator at Provo High, Deanna oversees all special education services, personnel, and compliance. She is exceptional in these roles and has a vision that benefits all students and parents as they navigate their high school experience. All of our staff members appreciate Deanna’s passion and commitment to her work. Whether she is mentoring a teacher, meeting with a parent, or taking tickets at a PHS event, Deanna is a breath of fresh air to everyone she meets.

“However, what often goes unspoken is her knowledge and expertise in what she does. Not many people can manage the complexities and expertise that her position requires. In addition to her kindness and compassion, Deanna is an expert in her field. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience that guides us at Provo High School. She has made a significant footprint on our school, and this influence will remain long after she leaves our school. Provo High School is a better place because of her!”

Profesor del año del distrito: Deanna Coates

Cada año premiamos a un profesor con el Premio al Profesor del Año del Distrito por crear una rica cultura escolar y excelencia en la enseñanza. Este año otorgamos a la Facilitadora Principal Deanna Coates el Premio al Profesor del Año del Distrito.

Deanna Coates tiene una carrera histórica en la educación, ganando el premio al Maestro del Año de este año, la característica de maestro KSL en noviembre de 2021, y el Premio RC Willey Extra Mile en el otoño de 2020. Ella ha pertenecido al Equipo de Éxito Estudiantil para los estudiantes en riesgo, el Comité de Jefes de Departamento, y el Equipo de Liderazgo de Instrucción. La filosofía de enseñanza de Deanna Coates dirige sus acciones. Cree que la enseñanza consiste en aprender a través de pequeños pasos y celebrar las victorias en el camino. Su recompensa es trabajar con varios alumnos cuando ganan esos momentos de “lo entiendo”, lo que hace que la lucha merezca la pena. Su objetivo es crear un espacio en el que los alumnos se sientan libres para cometer errores y probar nuevos conceptos.
