Christine Durst: Media Specialist

Professionals. The teachers and principals in our district do so much to facilitate the instruction of the students in Provo, but the support that is given by those other than teachers and administrators can often get overlooked.

Christine Durst is the District Media Specialist. As such, she is in charge of organizing the librarians all across the district, as well as ordering the books for the district as a whole. We had a few minutes to find out what she is up to currently. Please enjoy this window into the heart of the District’s libraries.

What do books mean to you?

–You’re going to learn that we librarians have a very special and intimate relationship with books (laughs). Every aspect of them draws me in and I get totally obsessed with them.

What are you working on right now for your libraries?

–Of course, right now we are ramping up to the holidays. It’s all Holiday books all the time! We have a list of recommendations that we are planning on sharing with everyone pretty soon.

Do you have a favorite book out of the ones you’re working on for the Holidays?

–I think my favorite book that’s on my mind right now is the Christmas Owl! The illustrations are so precious and the story is darling. Of course, there’s also a book on the list with one of my favorite illustrators, P.J. Lynch.

What makes you love Lynch so much?

–I think illustrations are one of the most important parts of children’s books. The words are important, of course, their flow and rhythm. But good illustrations are the things that kids care the most about. P.J. Lynch creates masterpieces in each one of his pages. He makes YouTube videos you can watch of his artistic process, which is really cool.

Does he have any stand-out pieces for you?

–One of the coolest things he’s done is a wordless book. The entire story is done completely through illustrations, but the story is absolutely there. It’s really neat how you can follow along and read with just illustrations.

Unrelated to your job, what is the most “you” thing you have in your house?

–We love the 50s retro-style aesthetic. We have this really cool two-toned teal and white car door from a Plymouth Belvedere hanging in our kitchen. It just fits us perfectly.

En honor a la semana de la educación, el Distrito quisiera iluminar un poco a nuestros Profesionales de Apoyo a la Educación. Los maestros y directores en nuestro distrito hacen mucho para facilitar la instrucción de los estudiantes en Provo, pero el apoyo que es dado por aquellos que no son maestros y administradores a menudo puede ser pasado por alto.

Christine Durst es la especialista en medios de comunicación del distrito. Como tal, se encarga de organizar a los bibliotecarios de todo el distrito, así como de ordenar los libros para todo el distrito. Tuvimos unos minutos para averiguar qué está haciendo actualmente. ¿Qué significan los libros para ti?

-Vas a aprender que los bibliotecarios tenemos una relación muy especial e íntima con los libros (risas). Cada aspecto de ellos me atrae y me obsesiono totalmente con ellos.

¿En qué está trabajando ahora mismo para sus bibliotecas?

-Por supuesto, ahora mismo estamos preparando las vacaciones. Todo son libros de vacaciones, todo el tiempo. Tenemos una lista de recomendaciones que estamos planeando compartir con todos muy pronto.

¿Tienes algún libro favorito de los que estás preparando para las vacaciones?

-¡Creo que mi libro favorito que está en mi mente ahora mismo es el Búho de Navidad! Las ilustraciones son preciosas y la historia es encantadora. Por supuesto, también hay un libro en la lista con uno de mis ilustradores favoritos, P.J. Lynch.

¿Por qué te gusta tanto Lynch?

-Creo que las ilustraciones son una de las partes más importantes de los libros para niños. Las palabras son importantes, por supuesto, su fluidez y su ritmo. Pero las buenas ilustraciones son lo que más interesa a los niños. P.J. Lynch crea obras maestras en cada una de sus páginas. Hace vídeos en YouTube en los que se puede ver su proceso artístico, lo que es realmente genial.

¿Hay alguna pieza que destaque para ti?

-Una de las cosas más interesantes que ha hecho es un libro sin palabras. Toda la historia se hace completamente a través de ilustraciones, pero la historia está absolutamente ahí. Es muy bonito cómo se puede seguir y leer sólo con las ilustraciones.

Sin relación con su trabajo, ¿qué es lo más “suyo” que tiene en su casa?

-Nos encanta la estética de estilo retro de los años 50. Tenemos una puerta de coche bicolor de un Plymouth Belvedere colgada en la cocina. Nos encaja perfectamente.
