Centennial Middle School Mock Trial Team

Eighth Graders in Riley Hanni’s Mock Trial class at Centennial Middle School believe practice makes perfect. While their competition is still months away, they know hard work and preparation will help them succeed. As a mock trial team, these Centennial Middle Schoolers must know all things concerning law, rhetoric and public speaking in order to do well this February and March at the annual Utah Mock Trial Competition.

To do so, students will continually work on practice cases until their competition to help them develop questions and statements. As they dive into these practice cases, students will learn to craft strong legal arguments by looking at the cases from all angles. Part of this practice also involves receiving feedback and assistance from BYU Law students on a daily basis. By working on the cases together, the eighth graders gain a better understanding of what areas need improvement.

According to Hanni, the Mock Trial class offered at Centennial is a driven course, requiring students to actively participate and work as a team. The students use critical thinking skills and spend much time reading their cases to develop their arguments. As a result of these practices, Hanni has observed increased scores on her students’ SAGE tests. She knows that these skills as well as others cultivated in this class such as public speaking and problem solving will help the students in all aspects of life.

We are proud of all the student’s hard work and wish them well as they prepare for their upcoming competition.
