Diversity & Equity will be hosting another of its Speaker Series Events on Monday, May 10 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Join us for a discussion on Asian history in Utah and issues that the Asian community is facing in 2021.

This event will be hosted LIVE on the Diversity & Equity YouTube Channel.

We are excited to have the following four renowned panelist at this event:

Emilio Camu

Emilio Camu

Emilio Manuel Camu is a Tagalog-Bikolnon Filipino immigrant and first-gen graduate. An alumnus of the U, he holds an MEd in Educational Leadership & Policy and a BA in Communications & Asian Pacific Islander Studies. For the past ten years, he has served on the boards of numerous Asian Pacific Islander organizations both locally and nationally. He’s currently the National Vice President of Education & Culture for OCA National, Director and current President of OCA Asian Pacific Islander American Advocates Utah, Founder and Director of the Filipino American National Historical Society Utah, and Treasurer for Mana Academy Charter School.

Max Chang

Max Chang

Max Chang received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania with a double major in marketing and entrepreneurial management. Currently, he is the Chief Operating Officer and partner of American Estate Management Corporation.

Max has served on numerous arts and cultural related boards in Utah. He is currently on the Spike 150 Foundation Board and the Vice-Chair of the Advisory Committee on Equity Educational Services for Students for the Utah state Board of Education. He is a past board member of Salt Lake County’s Zoo Arts and Parks Tier 1, Center for the Arts (now Arts and Culture) and Cultural Facilities Support Program Advisory Boards. He also has served on the boards of the Natural History Museum of Utah, Karl Malone Foundation for Kids, Utah Film Center, Holladay Preschool and is currently the Treasurer of the Oakridge Elementary Parent Teachers Association. He served on the Governor’s Mansion Artist Awards Committee from 2010-2020In 2019, the Utah Division of State History awarded Max with two Outstanding Achievement Awards for creating and teaching over 1200 students and 400 teachers on the contribution of Chinese railroad workers to the completion of the nation’s first Transcontinental railroad and as a member of the Spike 150 Executive Board. Also, in 2019, the Utah Cultural Alliance recognized Max as a Special Honoree for his work in advocating for the arts.

John Author

John Arthur is the 2021 Utah Teacher of the Year and Finalist for National Teacher of the Year. He teaches 6th grade at Meadowlark Elementary in Salt Lake City, and he is also an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at Westminster College. Arthur represents the Asian community on the Utah State Board of Education’s Advisory Committee on Equity of Educational Services for Students (ACEESS).

Diversidad y Equidad tendrá otro evento de la serie de discursos el lunes 10 de mayo a las 7:00-8:00 p.m. Disfrute de una discusión sobre la historia asiática en Utah y los problemas que la comunidad asiática está enfrentando en 2021.

Emilio Manuel Camu es un inmigrante filipino de origen tagalo y de primera generación que se graduó. Es ex alumno de la U y tiene un máster en Liderazgo y Política Educativa y una licenciatura en Comunicación y Estudios sobre las Islas del Pacífico Asiático. Durante los últimos diez años ha formado parte de las juntas directivas de numerosas organizaciones de isleños asiáticos del Pacífico, tanto a nivel local como nacional. En la actualidad es vicepresidente nacional de Educación y Cultura de OCA National, director y actual presidente de OCA Asian Pacific Islander American Advocates Utah, Fundador y director de la Filipino American National Historical Society Utah y Tesorero de Mana Academy Charter School.

Max Chang tiene una licenciatura en Ciencias Políticas por la Universidad de California, Berkeley, y un MBA por la Wharton School of Business de la Universidad de Pensilvania, con una doble especialización en marketing y gestión empresarial. John Arthur es el Profesor del Año 2021 en Utah y finalista para el Profesor del Año a nivel nacional. Es profesor de grado 6 en la escuela primaria Meadowlark de Salt Lake City, y también es profesor adjunto en la Escuela de Postgrado de Educación del Westminster College. Arthur representa a la comunidad asiática en el Comité Asesor sobre la Equidad de los Servicios Educativos para los Estudiantes (ACEESS) de la Junta Estatal de Educación de Utah.
