Recently, Amelia Earhart Elementary third graders invited their parents to join them for a Parent Engagement Day in their classroom. Activities were centered on building their understanding of the movement and make up of the moon. Students compared and contrasted the two rocks, basalt and anorthosite, that make up the surface of the moon. They reviewed the eight phases of the moon by creating models using Oreo cookies.

Students also made a craft that modeled the rotation and revolution of the earth, moon, and sun. Finally, parents and students participated in recreating how craters are formed on the surface of the moon by throwing rocks into a mixture of flour and pudding. Together they predicted, observed, and discussed the patterns created when meteors hit the moon’s surface. All in all, parents and students enjoyed the opportunity to discover and learn together.
