A school district is only as strong as the people behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
For the past 30 years, Melanie Shelley is that person.
As the Human Resources Executive Assistant, Melanie is the first face many teachers see when they join the Provo City School District, setting the tone for their experience from the very beginning. Her unwavering professionalism, deep knowledge, and kindness have earned her this month’s Provo Way Award.
Michelle Walker, HR Office Assistant and nominator, highlighted just how invaluable Melanie’s contributions have been over the years:
“She has worked in HR for 30 years and knows so much information and is very helpful to everyone who comes to the district office. One of the many jobs that Melanie does in HR is to hire new teachers. At certain times in the year, she will be meeting with more than 50 teachers at different times and always makes them feel important. She takes the time to ask questions and help them to feel at ease.”
Hiring new teachers is just one of the many responsibilities Melanie takes on with care. She is also responsible for placing student teachers in classrooms, attending university teacher fairs to bring in new talent, and overseeing the posting of job openings across the district. Beyond her official duties, she supervises the front desk, stepping in whenever needed to answer phones, assist visitors, and ensure operations flow seamlessly.
“If needed, she steps in and answers phones and will cover so those at the front can go to lunch. We are grateful for her and her knowledge,” Walker added.
She is, as mentioned, the first point of contact for new teachers in most cases, offering reassurance, guidance, and a warm welcome. Her ability to make people feel valued from day one has made a lasting impact on countless educators and staff members in the district.
For three decades, Melanie has quietly and diligently shaped the foundation of Provo City School District. Melanie is how students get the best teachers, part of ensuring teachers feel supported, and why the district continues to attract and retain top talent.
Her knowledge, experience, and generosity of spirit have made a difference to so many.
Thank you for everything, and congratulations.
