“FCCLA has truly been a life-changing presence for me… It felt like a community where I could grow and connect. It’s become one of the most meaningful parts of my high school experience.” —Rachel Ryu, 2024–2025 Timpview FCCLA Chapter President & 2025–2026 Utah FCCLA State Vice President
On March 25, at the Utah FCCLA State Conference held at the Davis Conference Center, Rachel Ryu of Timpview High School was named Chapter Officer of the Year—a distinction reserved for Utah’s most dedicated, effective, and impactful student leaders in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) program. The announcement, delivered as a surprise during the General Awards Session, left Rachel stunned and elated, surrounded by fellow officers, advisors, and peers who have seen her journey unfold firsthand.
A Timpview junior and the current FCCLA Chapter President, Rachel oversees a thriving chapter of over 80 active student members. Her leadership is defined not only by attendance and planning, but by meaningful, hands-on work that meets community needs and amplifies student voice. From expanding participation in Edgemont Elementary’s annual Trunk or Treat from 85 to over 200 attendees, to organizing the heartwarming Dolls of Hope service project (hand-stitching teddy bears for refugee children), Rachel embodies the mission of FCCLA: to strengthen families and communities through leadership and service.
And, as Utah’s newly appointed State Vice President, Rachel will now represent thousands of FCCLA members statewide—furthering student-led initiatives, supporting competitors in STAR and proficiency events, and helping shape the program’s future. Her recognition comes after her chapter met and exceeded all state-set goals and earned top regional honors for member growth.
“This award was so heartwarming,” Rachel said. “It feels like a recognition of all the heart and effort that went into every project, every meeting, and every connection—not just by me, but by our whole team.”
Rachel’s leadership journey has included everything from running fundraising events to launching a campus-wide recycling program, helping Timpview go from no formal recycling system to collecting multiple 55-gallon bags of recyclables each week. She also recently earned first place in the Geospatial Technology event at the Timpview TSA State Conference, alongside fellow student Veronica Gao, and has placed in the top 10 at nationals back to back these past two years in Event Management and Public Policy Advocate.
Through it all, Rachel credits her growth to the guidance of her advisors, Ms. Bunn and Mrs. Nicholson, and the community that has lifted her up. “I’m endlessly grateful,” she shared, “for their unwavering support and belief in me. Their guidance has meant the world to me, as has the support of everyone who has helped me along the way. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me and helping me grow into the leader I am today.
Lastly, Rachel credits FCCLA in helping her find way forward: “FCCLA helped me find purpose, form lifelong friendships, and discovering a strengthened version of myself for my future and career.”
Congratulations to Rachel Ryu—Chapter Officer of the Year, student leader. It isn’t an overstatement to reiterate the aforementioned point– Rachel strengthens our families and communities by her leadership and service. And she’s only getting started.
Thanks for making Provo great.
