Emma Lafollette Shines at Timpview Market Days with Starrsmoke Jewelry

There was a familiar buzz around Timpview High last week as students turned passions into profits at the school’s semiannual Market Days event. Market Days is an event led by Timpview High School Teacher Scott Johnson’s Entrepreneurship. Students host vendor stalls for businesses they’ve drafted and designed business plans for in Johnson’s class.

During the two-day showcase, students sold everything from snow cones to vasos de fruta and chamoy to custom gaming mats, flavored “dirty” sodas, and hand pies, transforming the commons into a bustling marketplace. Among these budding entrepreneurs was senior Emma Lafollette, who turned heads with her handcrafted jewelry business, Starrsmoke Jewelry, proving that a small idea in your sophomore year can evolve into something spectacular.

Emma hosted a vibrant stall that combined her Starrsmoke Jewelry display and “dirty” soda stand. Hung from an antique jewelry display, Emma showed off unique earrings and necklaces, crafted from an eclectic mix of dice, beads, buttons, and metal art pieces. Each piece was handmade and one-of-a-kind.

Emma’s jewelry journey began as a simple hobby. “I started making jewelry during my sophomore year,” she shared. “I started selling through an online thrift store, and it just skyrocketed from there. I had so many orders. I really enjoyed what I was doing, so I’ve just wanted to expand further.” Encouraged by that early success, Emma realized she had the spark of a real business. Under the name Starrsmoke Jewelry, she expanded her designs and began selling directly to classmates and online followers.

Emma was quick to credit Timpview’s teachers and classes for helping turn her creativity into a profitable endeavor. “Definitely, the Woods teacher, Mr. Whatcott, and the Metals teacher, Mr. Robertson. And then also the Entrepreneurship teacher. Honestly, any of the hands-on teachers,” Emma shared.  “I like the Interior Design teacher. I loved all of them.”

Craftwork, design, entrepreneurship: all skills carefully honed in our CTE courses, on display in Marketing Days. And that is what is so great about Marketing Days– they help students like Emma grow.

And, as her confidence grows, Emma prepares to take Starrsmoke Jewelry to the next level. She is currently working on building a website and developing a stronger online presence (check out her Instagram, @starrsmokejewelry, to see her latest creations). With graduation on the horizon, Emma is laying the scaffolding to ensure her business grows and climbs steadily.

The Market Days Event is many things. It’s a fun way for students to test their classroom knowledge through a serious, self-led project, with a bit of money on the line for their efforts. But, just as importantly, it’s a stepping stone for our future leaders: for some, this is the first step; for others, it’s just the middle of the road.
