Launa Naylor, a librarian at Canyon Crest Elementary in Provo, Utah, has received a mini-grant from the PCSD Foundation to purchase Spanish-language books for the school’s Battle of the Books program. This grant will allow students in the school’s Spanish Dual Language Immersion (DLI) course to participate in the competition, helping them engage with the program in a way that supports their learning.

Battle of the Books is a quiz-style competition where teams of students answer questions about books they have read. The team that answers the most questions correctly moves on to compete at the district level. This new addition of Spanish-language books will make it possible for Canyon Crest’s Spanish-speaking students to join the fun and test their knowledge alongside their peers.

The grant will also help foster a more welcoming environment at Canyon Crest. By providing Spanish-language titles, students who speak Spanish at home will have the chance to engage with the school community in the same way as other students. This will support their academic growth and help them feel more connected to the school’s activities.

Each year, the Provo City School District Foundation awards mini-grants to teachers with innovative project ideas. Teachers must submit a proposal for consideration, and a committee selects the recipients. Naylor’s successful application is a great example of the district supporting educators who create meaningful learning experiences for all students.

Congratulations to Launa Naylor and all the mini-grant winners for their hard work and dedication to improving education!
