Hello, Provo City. I am Superintendent Dau from the Provo City School District. This is the week of June 23rd. We just have a few updates that we want to share with you.

First and foremost, Wasatch Elementary. We still have a third party that is providing our entire report on the failure of our retaining wall there. They’re going to ensure that whatever design that we put into place is going to be sufficient to make sure that that type of thing does not happen again.

We’ll have more answers in the middle of July once we get that full report, and we’ll share that out with our Wasatch Elementary community, as well as keep that on our website.

Also, Timpview High School does not have power currently. They have cut that power for a few weeks as we’re going in to start different phases of construction. If you need to get a hold of administrators or a front office staff that will, they will be available in the athletic center. So you can, , go up and see them. It’s up by the Thunderdome basically.

District Office is also going to be under construction as we do some asbestos abatement so that we can replace our floors on the main level and in the basement. So several individuals may be working remotely or in different sites, but our receptionists will be available in student services. All of our phones will still be active. You can still contact us and we’ll get you in touch with the right people. We’ll still be checking all of our email.

A lot of our individuals go on break in July. We know that people are like, wait, I thought they worked all year. Yes, we do work all year, but we also do get some vacation days and we try to encourage individuals to take that time in July, since that’s when most of our schools are out. So that we are not in any way disrupting the major services that are available out in our schools during the school year.

This coming fall, we’re gonna be doing a major attendance campaign to really get people to understand the importance of coming to school, helping our  teachers be supported with that process. Helping our parents establish routines with their kids and understanding how important it is that they’re in school every single day. And trying to share with you some of the academic data that we have when students are missing a lot of schools. So we’ll be talking quite a bit about that.

We also want to encourage all of you that as you go on to do online registration, please complete that even if you have done it in years past, we need to ensure that your information is updated.

We are discovering slowly but surely, that several of our parents have not updated their information and PowerSchool for years. That means we have inaccurate phone numbers. We don’t have correct email addresses. And so when parents are like, well, I had no idea that that was happening. A lot of times it’s either because you’ve opted out of those messaging platforms. We have wrong phone numbers that are in place there, and so it really disables our ability to get in touch with you, particularly in case of emergencies. So we are going to be establishing that our students will not be able to see their teachers if they’re in elementary school, and our students will not be able to see their schedules until their parents go in and update that information on PowerSchool.

So once PowerSchool comes back up after the rollover, after July 10th. If you’ll go in and please verify that information, that would be most helpful. We are currently interviewing for an assistant principal at Edgemont Elementary because of the promotion of Des Olson over to Wasatch Elementary to be the head principal.

We do have an opening there. And we hope to get that filled this week so that we can get Edgemont well moving on its way. We do have a board meeting on June 24th at 4:00 PM is the study session, which will be in the professional development center. And 6:00 PM will be our business meeting. We are doing first readings of several policies, which will still go out for public input and back to our policy committee for further review.

We’re going to be sharing with you some of our end of year data, some of the experiences that our students have had with student travel and also finalizing our budget for the 2025 school year. So we have a few items still as we’re working through the summer. We will not have any board meetings in July, but I’ll continue to update you with important information as we move towards the registration process and what that will look like because before you know it, we’ll be back in school.

I hope all of you have a great week, everyone. Bye now.
