Stepping into a new role is often frightening, with unseen hurdles and setbacks. Teaching is a particularly challenging career in that you’re never entirely sure what the profession is like until you’re up the creek and paddling full-tilt. Those who take the time to take newbies under their wing are indispensable; all teachers can remember the specialist, teacher, or administrator who took the time during their first year to offer advice and help coach. They create lifelong bonds.
It is precisely why Debbie Burnside-Dewey, a Special Education Coordinator and Specialist, was nominated by Sean Edwards, Principal of Canyon Crest Elementary. “As a new special education teacher, she supported my understanding of curriculum and compliance,” he started. “Now, as a principal, she continues to be a reflective collaborator.” Collaboration is, at its core, crucial to education– as the old adage goes, ‘it takes a village.’ As Edwards attests, it’s at the core of Debbie’s work philosophy: “Debbie has been an incredible thought partner throughout my career. She always makes herself available to collaborate, process ideas, and answer questions. She is an exemplary advocate for students and reflects how students are accessing education in their least restrictive environment.”
“I am grateful to Debbie for not only the visible support she provides but also for modeling our district’s core values,” Edwards concluded; we agree. No one is more representative of the Provo Way. Thank you, Debbie, for collaborating, advocating, coaching, and caring. You are what makes Provo great.
