Student School Board Position Opening

Calling Future Leaders: Apply to Be a Student Member of the School Board

The Provo City School District is now accepting applications for the Student Board Member position for the 2025-2026 school year. This opportunity allows students to actively participate in board meetings, work alongside district leaders, and provide a student voice in shaping district policies and decisions.

The role of the Student Board Member is to:

  • Provide student perspectives on matters discussed by the board
  • Serve as a liaison between students across the district and the board
  • Participate in board meetings and assigned board activities

To support them in these responsibilities, Student Board Members are mentored by a Board Member and a district administrator, offering guidance and professional development throughout the year.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in the Provo City School District and be a senior during the 2025-2026 school year
  • Reside within either the Timpview High School or Provo High School boundary
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7, with no “F” or “I” grades in the most recent term
  • Have a clean disciplinary record, free of truancies or violations for at least 12 months prior to applying
  • Be willing to commit 14-16 hours per month to meetings, preparation, and student outreach
  • Be enrolled in and attend the Student Government class at their respective high school
  • The district will select one student from each high school boundary to serve as a Student Board Member.

Responsibilities and Expectations  

Student Board Members are expected to:

  • Attend and actively participate in all School Board business meetings and study sessions
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing agendas and materials in advance
  • Lead the Student Advisory Council by organizing agendas and reporting findings to the board
  • Gather feedback from students throughout the district and share relevant insights
  • Serve on a board committee in one of the following areas: Policy, Legislative, or Capital Facilities
  • Demonstrate professionalism by being punctual, prepared, and respectful in all board-related duties
  • Attend district events such as the USBA Conference and Day on the Hill, if schedules allow

Application Process

Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on March 17, 2025.

Required materials include:

  • Completed online application form with personal and guardian information
  • Three recommendations, including one from a high school teacher
  • Consent for the Board of Education to review academic, attendance, and disciplinary records
  • A personal resume highlighting achievements, leadership roles, and extracurricular involvement
  • A one- to two-page narrative explaining the applicant’s interest in serving, their ability to represent students, and their dedication to education, politics, or public service
  • Signatures from 50 currently enrolled high school students in the Provo City School District
  • Finalists will be invited to interview at the district office during the week of March 24, 2025. The Board will make final selections no later than April 1, 2025.
