Lynchpins, siege weapons, car bodies, luxury housing. Just a few of the projects I saw students design using engineering software in Mr. Hansen’s CAD Architecture and Engineering classes. I recall my time in Mr. Hansen’s class as a Provo High Junior fondly– I still have plans from his class for a private redwood patio I’ve kept in my back pocket for someday soon. Hopefully.

Students work on projects ranging in scale from nails and washers to cars and houses– after all, design is atomic, invisible, and essential.

Di seguito una breve intervista con l'eccellente architetto CAD e insegnante di progettazione ingegneristica della Provo High School, Steve Hansen.

What skills do you think students might be lacking before your class? What does your course offer new students?

R: Non credo che i bambini abbiano tante opportunità pratiche di creare cose come in passato. Potrebbero non essere in garage ad armeggiare o a lavorare a progetti domestici perché hanno così tante opzioni virtuali.

L'aspetto pratico del progetto è qualcosa che voglio privilegiare nella mia classe. Ma ci sono ancora molti ragazzi interessati: il programma CTE della nostra scuola è piuttosto approfondito. Il desiderio c'è, ed è per questo che i nostri corsi sono importanti.

What projects do students complete in your class?

R: Ogni studente concepisce e crea progetti di case reali. Gli studenti concepiscono, disegnano e progettano i loro piani di casa, piani di casa pratici. Le costruiscono secondo le migliori pratiche. Gli studenti utilizzano un software architettonico chiamato Revit, dove i loro progetti sono tridimensionali.

Are there any students you know stuck with architecture after your course?

A: All of the time. A while ago I had on old student visit Provo High to talk to my new students on Career Day. He was a fantastic student, and now he’s a fantastic professional architect.

What skills do you hope students take from your class?

R: Spero che i ragazzi che hanno frequentato il mio corso siano proprietari di case migliori. Quando andranno a comprare una casa o a ripararla, si sentiranno sicuri di quello che stanno facendo. È un'abilità di vita.

For students learning mechanical engineering, I hope that they see the world differently– someone crafted everything around us. Door handles, cars, chairs, you name it. I want my kids to see the effort that goes into the world we consumers take for granted every day.
