Last week, first graders in Marie Baird’s first grade class took their learning to a new dimension as they learned about three-dimensional shapes.
The Franklin Elementary first graders were introduced to new shapes such as cubes, cones, cylinders and many more as they learned about the differences between two-dimensional and three dimensional shapes.
Students learned the names of these different shapes through using toothpicks and marshmallows to create real-life structures of the shapes. They also used their structures to learn how to combine the three-dimensional shapes to make new shapes.
This activity goes along with the first grade math core standard that states, “compose three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.”
Overall, this was a great hands-on activity that allowed students to visualize these new shapes and understand the different ways in which they are made.
