On Monday, April 21st, two elementary schools held art shows to share their students’ work with family and the community.
At Rock Canyon Elementary, the halls were filled with student art. Projects ranged from abstract pieces inspired by Mondrian to wintry scenes of the Arctic and northern lights. The school turned its hallways into a gallery space, showcasing contributions from every grade.
The event included a visit from John Darley, a professional painter with ties to the school. Darley is a full-time artist, and some of his work is set to launch into space on a SpaceX rocket. During the event, he gave live painting demonstrations and stood as an example of what it’s like to work as a professional artist.
The evening also featured live music performed by Rock Canyon students. Attendees listened to jazz and piano music as they walked through the displays.
Edgemont Elementary hosted their own event the same day. Their art show included a wide range of student creations and welcomed a guest artist as well—Mark Kistler. Known for his television art programs and school visits, Kistler taught a large crowd how to draw using simple techniques. The cafeteria was filled with students and families who followed along with his step-by-step drawing lessons.
Both schools used the day to highlight creativity and bring their communities together through art.
