Policy 6817 Naming of Schools

New district buildings may be named after persons, places or things that have attained national or local prominence, or local geographical references.

While the Board of Education may solicit submissions suggesting appropriate names for a new school, the naming of schools is at the sole discretion of the Board.

When an existing school is demolished and reconstructed, the Board, at its discretion, may choose to change the school’s name or the Board may solicit suggestions for a new name from community members and select one of the names suggested. In so doing, the Board may wish to grant appropriate acknowledgement to the school being replaced by ensuring that an appropriate small display of the history of the school (including the name of the school being replaced) may be placed near the main entrance of the newly constructed building.

When a new school is built, the Board, at its discretion, may solicit suggestions for the school’s name from community members. The Board may select one of the names suggested by community members or may at their discretion select a name of their own choosing.
