Yesterday, Dixon Middle School’s Jazz Band performed at the state capitol!
“For students who have never been to the state capitol, this was an exciting experience for them,” said Dixon Jazz Band Director Christy Giblon. “It was good for them to perform in a different venue where they could show off their improv skills.”
“After all, that’s a lot of what Jazz is all about,” said Giblon. “Jazz is about making your own music and taking risks; performing on the fly.”
“We had several soloists,” said Giblon. “We had a tenor saxophone solo from Carlee Turner, bass string solo from Bauer Paul, baritone saxophone solo from Lila Nimer, and trumpet solo from Kaleb Lee.”
While performing was fun, these students were able to grasp a deeper understanding of the significance behind their performance.
“It was good for the kids to see the support from our community in attendance,” said Giblon. “Members of our school board were there as well as teachers and school district officials. They are the ones who talk to legislation. They are what make this possible.”
“And in turn,” said Giblon. “It allows legislators to see what we are accomplishing in our public school art programs.”
“We’d like to thank the school board and superintendent for sending us! This was truly a great experience that we won’t forget!”
