Dixon Donates to Hurricane Harvey

On Friday, September 8, 2017, the Dixon student body gathered clothes, blankets, underwear, socks, dry and canned foods, first aid kits and hygiene essentials to send to Hurricane Harvey victims. Lucy Ordaz, leader of the Latinos in Action (LIA) group, was inspired by Brené Brown’s social media post calling for help. Brené Brown is a famous author in Texas and asked for supplies to be sent to Hurricane Harvey victims.

Latinos in Action originated in Utah and has since grown throughout the state and taken root in other states as well. These Latino students search for service opportunities and aspire to better their lives through education, professionalism, and leadership. Every year, Ordaz gives her LIA group the opportunity to feed and clothe the homeless during November. However, with such an immediate call for help, the LIA jumped into action. Quickly, the service opportunity spread throughout the school and every student and parent began to donate and get involved in the cause.

Local county station, Z104, announced the initiative on the radio and offered to gather the supplies in its parking lot. Hilda Echegaray led this initiative and organized volunteers from Pride Trucking and 801 Coupon Addicts to voluntarily drive the supplies down to Texas for free. Our Dixon Middle School students were able to donate enough items to fill an entire SUV. As a district, we are excited about the values being taught and service being shared in our schools. What a great way to involve the entire school and help out victims in Texas. It truly is the Provo way!
