“I don’t know anyone who serves the students of Provo with the same devotion as Carmen.”
These words from Gina Solis, a fellow teacher at Independence High School, capture what makes Carmen Williams truly exceptional. As a Special Education teacher, Carmen’s impact doesn’t stop when students graduate—her commitment extends into their adult lives, ensuring they continue to feel supported and valued.
One former student, in particular, highlights Carmen’s incredible dedication. After graduating last year, this student—who faces significant challenges—struggled to find the same support he once received in school. Though he had a strong family foundation, he lacked the structure and guidance he needed to transition into adulthood. When his mother reached out to Carmen for help, Carmen didn’t hesitate.
Rather than simply offering advice or referrals, Carmen took action. She set up a connection with Vocational Rehab, hoping it would provide him with job training and support. When that process stalled, Carmen stepped in again, finding him a volunteer position at the Provo Library. There was only one catch: he needed direct supervision to participate.
So, after finishing her full workday, Carmen went to the library several afternoons each week—on her own time—to personally supervise this young man, giving him a sense of purpose and satisfaction from having somewhere to go and something meaningful to do.
Carmen’s actions speak volumes about the kind of educator she is. She is not just a teacher; she is an unwavering advocate for her students, past and present. Her belief in them doesn’t end at graduation—it continues, shaping their futures long after they leave her classroom.
For this reason, Carmen Williams is a truly deserving recipient of the Provo Way Award. Congratulations, Carmen, and thank you for your selfless dedication to your students.
