Das Fahrradreparaturprogramm der Independence High School vermittelt Fertigkeiten und dient der Gemeinschaft

At Independence High School, fixing a bike is more than just turning a wrench—it’s a chance to build skills, give back, and chart a path for the future. In one unique classroom, students learn to repair broken bicycles not just for practice, but to return them to kids in the community who need them most.

The Bike Repair program at Independence High School gives students a unique opportunity to gain mechanical skills while making a difference in their community. Designed as a hands-on course, the program focuses on real-world applications of bike maintenance and repair. Students  learn how to take apart and rebuild bicycles and use those skills to help others by repairing bikes for younger students at nearby elementary schools.

The process starts with outreach—students contact local schools to request broken or unusable bikes. Once collected, the bikes are transported back to Independence High, where students assess damage, make repairs, and prepare the bikes for safe use. After the work is complete, the bicycles are returned to the children who need them. This cycle of learning and giving creates a meaningful connection between Independence High and its surrounding schools.

Teacher Alice Ficklin leads the program and brings in local bike shop owners and repair professionals to provide students with expert guidance. These collaborations expose students to industry-level standards and techniques, giving them valuable insight into potential career paths and the confidence to pursue work in skilled trades.

Beyond technical know-how, the program builds relationships and teaches responsibility. Students gain experience that’s relevant whether they choose to attend college, enter the workforce, or explore alternative paths after graduation.

This year, support from the PCSD Foundation helped the program expand. Grant funds were used to purchase essential supplies like bicycle inner tubes, as well as Bluetooth-compatible helmets, which are now used during the class’s weekly rides. These resources have not only improved the quality of the repairs but also enhanced safety and student engagement.

With a focus on service, skill development, and community partnership, the Independence High bike repair program continues to offer students a practical and rewarding educational experience.
