Centennial Students Excel at National Science Bowl

Centennial Middle School students did very well at the 2018 National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. last week. They placed 3rd in the 2nd Annual Cyber Challenge event out of 48 teams. In addition, the students and their teacher, Ms. Ashley Damavandi, won $500 for Centennial’s science department and they were the first Utah middle school to ever make it to Nationals.

The National Science Bowl was created by the Department of Energy in 1991 to encourage students to both excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers within these fields. More than 275,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl throughout its 27-year history and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.

The team demonstrated teamwork and kindness, which reflected positively on Centennial Middle School, Provo City School District and the state of Utah.

The students had an amazing experience, as they met volunteers and government personnel with various STEM backgrounds and received a tour of the Capitol (courtesy of Senator Mike Lee’s staff). As they returned to school, they had even more drive to study the following tested areas: Life Science, Earth & Space (geology & astronomy), Physical Science, Mathematics and Energy (statistics, current research at government labs and the environment); also some Computer Programming to help in the Cyber Challenge (which was a Capture the Flag – Jeopardy style event, originally derived for Computer Security, which was created especially by DOE computer programmers for the National Science Bowl competition. It requires science and math knowledge in order for teams to solve algorithms for points).
