Elementary students district-wide clashed under the bright lights of Provo High School’s auditorium during the 2022 Battle of the Books Finals.

Students worked in teams divided by 3rd and 4th grade and 5th and 6th grade, awaiting a slew of questions about books they read before the challenge. The questions are tricky; some questions are about secondary and tertiary characters, while other questions deal with unique points of plot that only close-readers will catch. All of the students, families, and librarians involved gave their best to prepare for tonight.

The teams on stage proved their mettle in earlier school battles. The top teams from each school’s local battle represent their school on this night for the finals. All of the participating students deserve praise– as do our librarians who coordinate the readings, practices, and events. Looking across the attending crowd, one can pick out each school’s librarian, gazing with keen hope for their team.

The value of events like Battle of the Books is often understated, but getting kids interested and involved in community reading can be laborious. For our librarians, it’s usually a labor of love; our librarians go above and beyond their vocation, cutting through regular school strife and bringing books to life in vivid color and dimension for students. Battle of the Books creates city culture, and it’s one motion in the innumerable motions that our librarians do in creating school culture. We thank all of our librarians for caring for the intellectual and emotional wellbeing of our students.

This year we had Canyon Crest, Edgemont, Provo Peaks, Provost, Rock Canyon, Spring Creek, Sunset View, Franklin, Timpanogos, Lakeview, Wasatch, and Westridge participate. Both Dixon and Centennial Middle School participated, and High School students competed in the “Name That Book” challenge. We had close to 1,800 students of our 17,000 in our district participate– that’s more than one in ten students.

Congratulations to all! Here are the results:

Middle School: Centennial

3/4 Grade Winners:

1st place: Westridge

2nd place: Edgemont

5/6 Grade Winners:
