Audiology Services

Introduction

Provo City School District has a long-standing history of providing professional audiology services to its students. Since the early 1970’s, this tradition has continued, with a highly qualified audiologist on staff, specializing in pediatric and education-based hearing health care.

A full-service hearing clinic is located in the district office, at 280 West 940 North, Provo, Utah. Normal office hours are 8-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. Phone: (801) 374-4895.

Educational Audiology – Overview

Audiologists are qualified to ensure that all students have adequate access to auditory information in their educational settings. Children with any degree or type of hearing impairment, or an auditory processing disorder, require the expertise of an educational audiologist.

In addition, students with learning disabilities, reading difficulties, attention problems, and those struggling with English as a second language benefit from the audiologist’s expertise on how listening and learning are impacted by noise and classroom acoustics.

The audiologist provides ongoing support to students who receive special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2006) or services under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973). In other words, children who receive special education services in their school, and/or whose hearing impairment requires specific classroom accommodations to facilitate learning, are eligible for audiology services.

Educational audiologists interact with teachers, parents, administrators, and other related service personnel, as members of the school’s IEP team.

The audiologist is a school’s best resource for recommending and maintaining the appropriate assistive listening technologies for the student and the classroom team. Educational audiologists correlate diagnostic audiological information to the day-to-day impact of hearing impairment in the classroom.

District Services

• Children ages 3 to 21 are eligible for audiology services in Provo School District if they qualify under IDEA or Section 504 as described above.
• The audiologist performs comprehensive, diagnostic hearing evaluations at the district office clinic through a referral process. Please contact a member of your child’s educational team if you have concerns that may indicate a referral to the audiologist.
• The audiologist provides instruction and orientation to students and school personnel on the use of amplification systems (hearing aids, cochlear implants, classroom sound systems and personal listening devices). Verification and troubleshooting of these devices is also provided.
• The district audiologist oversees the district’s hearing screening program, which falls under the Child Find provisions of IDEA. The speech-language pathologist assigned to each school assists in carrying out the screening, which takes place every school year.
• The audiologist participates with the school IEP team in developing the student’s IEP, ensuring that necessary accommodations and programming for student success are identified.

Audiologist:

Jeramy Jenkins is a certified and licensed audiologist, and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. He received his Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education from Utah State University and Doctor of Audiology degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry’s School of Audiology (now Salus University). He has previously worked as a clinical audiologist in private practices in Nevada and Utah and as an educational audiologist for Davis School District (UT).
