Dear Parents of 3rd Grade Students,
We will begin district CogAT® (Cognitive Abilities Test™) testing in February to help identify accelerated third grade students for enrollment in the district’s full-time, 4-6 grade gifted/accelerated program, CAS, The Center for Accelerated Studies. To apply for CAS, parent applications must include a CogAT score. This letter gives you information about the test and when and where to take your child for testing.
The CogAT assessment is a nationally normed assessment of cognitive ability. It is not an achievement test based on curricula that has been taught, but is an aptitude test that measures a student’s general and specific cognitive abilities. It measures learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in 3 areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal, which are closely tied to academic success. Students typically take approximately 2 hours to complete the assessment.
Provo City School District’s Center for Accelerated Studies (CAS) offers full-time, gifted/accelerated programs for 4, 5 and 6th graders at two district sites: Provo Peaks Elementary (for students in Timpview boundaries) and Sunset View Elementary (for students in Provo High boundaries). Thirty students are accepted at each site for the fourth grade program.
The CAS application window is from March 15, 2017 to April 10, 2017. CAS applications include CogAT scores, prior testing, a parent survey, and a teacher survey. The parent portion of the application will be completed online. On March 15, the application will be available at provo.edu. The first round of acceptance letters will be sent on May 1, 2017. Additional reviews will take place later in May and in the summer, as needed.
The district is offering five CogAT testing opportunities for third graders. There is no charge for students currently enrolled at a Provo City School District school. To sign your child up to take the CogAT, please register with the following links.
